A Promise for Today: Wait on the Lord

...and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for Me.
-Isaiah 49:23b

"If you have a divine promise, you need not plead it with an "if", you may urge it with
a certainty. The Lord meant to fulfill the promise, or He would not have given it. God does not give His words merely to quiet us, and keep us hopeful for awhile with the intention of putting us off at the last; but when He speaks, it is because He means to do as He said." -C.H. Spurgeon

Wait on the Lord
by Fanny Crosby

Wait on the Lord, wait patiently,
And thou shalt in Him be blest;
After the storm, a holy calm,
And after thy labor rest.

Refrain
Wait on the Lord, for whom hast thou
On earth or in Heaven but He?
Over thy soul a watch He keeps,
Wherever thy path may be.

Wait on the Lord, wait cheerfully,
And He will thy youth renew;
Wait on the Lord obediently,
Whatever He bids thee do.

Refrain
Wait on the Lord, wait lovingly,
Confide in His care thy all;
Those that abide in perfect peace
No danger can e’er befall.

Refrain
Wait on the Lord, wait joyfully,
For then shall thy heart be strong;
Lo! by His hand He leadeth thee,
And thou shalt be filled with song

Sing to the Lord

"Singing God's praise is a work of the most meditation of any we perform in public. It keeps the heart longest upon the thing spoken. Prayer and hearing pass quick from one sentence to another; this sticks long upon it." —J. Lightfoot

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. -Colossians 3:16

 Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; Selah:
-Psalms 68:32

I AM THINE, O LORD
by Fanny Crosby

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Refrain:
Draw me nearer, nearer blessèd Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died.
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessèd Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the power of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

(Refrain)
O the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!

(Refrain)
There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.

(Refrain)

Meditating on God's Word

It is not the bee's touching of the flower that gathers honey, but her abiding for a time upon the flower that draws out the sweet.  It is not he that reads most, but he that meditates most, that will prove the choicest, sweetest, wisest and strongest Christian.

—T. Brooks

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #14

And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me,

to give every man according as his work shall be.
- Revelation 22:12

Will Jesus Find Us Watching?
by Fanny Crosby

When Jesus comes to reward His servants,
Whether it be noon or night,
Faithful to Him will He find us watching,
With our lamps all trimmed and bright?

Refrain:
Oh, can we say we are ready, brother?
Ready for the soul's bright home?
Say, will He find you and me still watching,
Waiting, waiting when the Lord shall come?

If, at the dawn of the early morning,
He shall call us one by one,
When to the Lord we restore our talents,
Will He answer thee, "Well done"?

Have we been true to the trust He left us?
Do we seek to do our best?
If in our hearts there is naught condemns us,
We shall have a glorious rest.

Blessed are those whom the Lord finds watching,
In His glory they shall share;
If He shall come at the dawn or midnight,
Will He find us watching there?

Well, this is the final day that I'd intended to do these posts, but it's been so good for me
to put these together and think more on the promises of God (and I hope for others who've read these also), that I'd like to at least perhaps once a week or so continue posting one, if I can. Praying the Lord will bless His Words to our hearts, and faith to believe His
precious promises.

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
-Romans 15:4

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #13

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peacewhose mind is stayed
on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
-Isaiah 26:3

Perfect peace---ah, precious promise.
E'en with storms around, within,
We've a shelter in our Saviour,
He has promised peace to them:

Those whose minds are stayed and trusting,
 Him alone our mighty God.
For with eyes on such a Saviour,
All our fears become so small.

The stormy winds and waves so high,
Will calm at His command.
Dear Saviour, hear our cries to Thee,
O hold us with Thy hand.

Let not our eyes, like Peter's did,
Look round upon the waves,
And seeing such, fear grip our hearts,
And sinking, go astray.

O keep our minds e'er stayed on Thee,
Just trusting as a child;
We need Thy gracious keeping, Lord,
Each day and ev'ry hour.

O dost thou know this mighty LORD,
My friend, I ask thee now?
Does trembling fill thy heart with fear--
And anxious is thy brow?

Do sins, like mighty billows roll,
Within thy heart, till all,
Seems bleak and hopeless,
As you fight, but winnest not at all.

There's peace for you! Sweet peace, my friend,
O! heed His mighty call.
Look to the Lamb of God and find,
This PERFECT PEACE with God.

O if your sins are burdensome, to you,
Then you can find,
Sweet rest in Jesus Christ, our Lord,
Who shed His Blood and died.

His Blood was shed the debt to pay,
For all those who believe,
Each one of those who comes to Him,
Eternal life receives.

He rose again, in victory!
O'er death, sin, and the grave.
Repent and seek Him, while you may,
For if you will not heed:
 You'll find yourself one dreadful day....
Eternally cast away.

JESUS CHRIST SAID:
"Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden
and I will give you rest."
-Matthew 11:28

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

2 Peter 3:10-14

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #12

The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
- Psalms 22:26

The meek alone shall satisfied be,
All others shall lack at the last.
O may we all learn of our meek, lowly, Lord,
On Him all our cares we can cast.

Sweet praises shall sound from those who seek,
Our loving and great, mighty Lord.
They'll live for ever with Him one glad day,
And gladly His praises sound forth.

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #11

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
 -Psalms 103:13-14

A Father loving and kind,
Is our God to those who are His.
He pities and cares at all times,
For those in His fear do abide.

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #10

 And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And He said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

And He said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

-Revelation 21:5-8

This poem was written by a boy named Alfred Wileman, who died at a young age, on February 13th, 1864, aged only eleven years and ten months. Alfred left behind him several pieces of poetry, written by him in a copybook. He wrote the poem below when he was only nine years old, showing much spiritual understanding above his years that evidently God had graciously given him.

HEAVEN
By Alfred Wileman, aged 9 years old

There is a place for those who love
The Lord, the God of Heaven above;
That place is Heaven, where all those meet
Who love to bow at Jesus' feet.

There is no sorrow there, nor pain,
But joy and peace for ever reign;
And Christ the Lord for ever stands
To welcome sinners to His hands.

There all the elders round the throne
Do join in one majestic tone;
There all the holy we shall see,
And dwell in their society.

There all those meet who loved the Lord,
And everywhere His name adored;
O may we run the heavenly race,
And reach at last the blissful place.

Alfred Wileman has long since overcome and reached that blissful place, reaping the promised reward of life everlasting, young though he was. Some of his last words were these, that his mother recorded him having said during his final days of sickness, though he was struggling to speak: "Palm--victory--praise--rejoice, ye saints, and render praise." Afterwards he waved both hands, and said, with all the strength he could muster, "Victory! victory! Jesus got the victory!" His face shone with joyfulness.

He also wrote other poems, one more of which I'll share here:

A PRAYER

Holy, holy, holy Lord!
Teach us to believe Thy Word;
Send Thy Spirit into our heart,
And Thy sovereign grace impart.
Our sins forgive,
Our hearts renew,
And let us live
Our lives anew.

Break our stony hearts, O Lord;
Bring us back again to God;
Give us help in time of need,
And our souls and bodies feed.
O save our souls
From lasting pains,
And make us free
From Satan's chains.

"He thus lived to fill his book, [speaking of the poems he wrote], and then, like the three Hebrew youths, passed through the fire without being touched by the flames. In loftier strains and sweeter songs he now sings Jehovah's matchless grace and Immanuel's dying love." -Harriet Wileman, Alfred's Mother

To read more about his story, and of others who died at young ages in the Lord, you can purchase the book "Lambs Safely Folded" HERE.  I look forward to meeting them all in Heaven someday. Will you be there? It's a question too serious to push out of your mind if God is dealing with you. Friend, seek the Lord while He may be found.

Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near:
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. -Isaiah 55:6-7

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #9

Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

-Isaiah 3:10-11

All shall be well, dear righteous one; do not fear.
All shall be well, though e'en now thou may'st have tears.
He'll wipe them all away someday,
And bid thee enter fairest day,
All shall be well, child of God; do not fear.

But ill! How grieves my heart! Shall to the wicked be.
Yes, fear! To you I bid you, fear!
It may be you shall see, the mercies of our Mighty God,
Poured out to even thee.
But if you do not heed and turn: ill, ill! 'twill be with thee.

14 Days of God's Promises - Day # 8

But whoso hearkeneth unto Me shall dwell safely,
 and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
-Proverbs 1:33

Held in His Mighty Arms
by Winfield Macomber

Safe is my refuge, sweet is my rest,
Ill cannot harm me, nor foes e’er molest;
Jesus my spirit so tenderly calms,
Holding me close in His mighty arms.

Refrain
Oh! what wonderful, wonderful rest!
Trusting completely in Jesus I’m blest;
Sweetly He comforts and shields from alarms,
Holding me safe in His mighty arms.

Pressing my tear stained cheek to His own,
Hushing my grief with His sweet gentle tone;
Touching my heart with His healing balms,
Holding me still in His mighty arms.

Refrain
Tempests may rage, sin’s surges may beat,
Ne’er can they reach my sheltered retreat;
Free from all danger, from dread alarms,
Resting so safe in His mighty arms.

Refrain

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #7

Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek
 and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
 -Matthew 11:29

Come, Learn of the Meek and Lowly
by Fanny Crosby

Come, learn of the meek and lowly,
Come, sit at the Master's feet;
No place in the world so holy,
No place in the world so sweet;
His lessons are plain and simple,
A balm to the wounded breast;
He maketh our burden lighter,
And giveth His children rest.

Refrain:
Then learn of the meek and lowly,
Come, sit at the Master's feet;
No place in the world so holy,
No place in the world so sweet.

O if we were more like Jesus,
And more from the world apart,
Communing with Him in spirit,
And nearer to Him in heart,
We should not complain so sadly,
When trouble and care we meet,
But carry at once our sorrows,
And lay them at Jesus' feet.

(Refrain)

He wept o'er the holy city,
He wept o'er a loved one dead;
He knoweth our every trial,
And seeth the tears we shed;
O live that our souls may enter
His kingdom with joy complete;
And there, through eternal ages,
We'll sit at the Master's feet.

(Refrain)

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #6

He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him.
 -John 14:21

Behold the Wondrous Love
by Fanny Crosby

Behold, behold the wondrous love
That ever flows from God above
Through Christ His only Son Who gave
His precious blood our souls to save.
Refrain:
All praise and glory be unto Jesus,
For He hath purchased a full salvation;
Behold how wondrous the proclamation,
"Whosoever will may come."
The "Spirit and the Bride say, Come"
And find in Him sweet rest and home;
Let Him that heareth echo still,
The blessed "whosoever will."
(Refrain)
Behold a fountain in His side,
To all the world is opened wide;
Where all may come, by sin oppressed,
And find in Him sweet peace and rest.
(Refrain)

Behold Him now exalted high
Above the bright and starry sky;
Yet through His Word He calleth still,
Come unto Me, whoever will.
(Refrain)

Behold in Him the Living Way,
That onward leads to endless day;
Where, saved by grace, the ransomed throng,
Lift up the everlasting song.
Refrain:
All praise and glory be unto Jesus,
For He hath purchased a full salvation;
Behold how wondrous the proclamation,
"Whosoever will may come."

 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Revelation 22:17

   Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
-1 John 3:1

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #5

The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the
prayer of the righteous.
-Proverbs 15:29

If sin we care not to forsake,

As we seek the God of all grace,
Our prayers unanswered shall be,
For our God, pure, holy, is He.

But if we confess and do grieve,

O'er the sins that before we did love,
His promise is true, just believe!
We'll receive blessings sweet from above.

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #4

Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will He teach sinners in the way.
The meek will He guide in judgment: and the meek will He teach his way.
All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.
-Psalms 25:8-10

O may our hearts in meekness bow,
Before Thy throne of grace;
Claiming naught but Jesus' blood,
Our glorious Hiding Place.

Quiet, Lord My Froward Heart
by John Newton

Quiet, Lord, my froward heart,
Make me teachable and mild;
Upright, simple, free from art,
Make me as a weaned child;
From distrust and envy free,
Pleased with all that pleaseth Thee.

What Thou shalt to-day provide,
Let me as a child receive;
What to-morrow may betide,
Calmly to Thy wisdom leave:
'Tis enough that Thou wilt care;
Why should I the burden bear?

As a little child relies
On a care beyond his own;
Knows he's neither strong nor wise;
Fears to stir a step alone;
Let me thus with Thee abide,
As my Father, Guard, and Guide.

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #3

Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.

Proverbs 8:33-35

Life! Eternal life.

Shall those be graced to have,
Who hear instruction,
Watch and wait,
And seek our mighty God.

Favour! Favour sweet.
Shall all those ones obtain,
Who heed and seek Him,
Claim His Word,
And fear His holy Name.

14 Days of God's Promises - Day #2

The LORD is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him.
 -Lamentations 3:25

Our help is sure,

If we endure,
And claim God's promise true.
Though long we wait,
We'll claim by faith,
Like Abraham of old.
