Tell Me the Old, Old Story

It had been awhile since I had thought of or sung this hymn, and the words
blessed me today as I was thinking on how what Christ has done for us never ceases
to give comfort to His own, and seems always new and sweet especially when we're weary
and cast down.

The author of the hymn wrote this:
I wrote the first part toward the end of January 1866. I was unwell at the time, just recovering from a severe illness, and the first stanza really indicates my state of health, for I was literally weak and weary. When I had written the first part, which consisted of eight stanzas of four lines each, I laid it aside, and it was not until the following November that I completed the whole hymn. -Katherine Hankey

  Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
-Matthew 11:28

Tell Me the Old, Old Story

Tell me the old, old story
Of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory,
Of Jesus and His love.
Tell me the story simply,
As to a little child,
For I am weak and weary,
And helpless and defiled.

Refrain
Tell me the old, old story,
Tell me the old, old story,
Tell me the old, old story,
Of Jesus and His love.

Tell me the story slowly,
That I may take it in,
That wonderful redemption,
God’s remedy for sin.
Tell me the story often,
For I forget so soon;
The early dew of morning
Has passed away at noon.

Refrain
Tell me the story softly,
With earnest tones and grave;
Remember I’m the sinner
Whom Jesus came to save.
Tell me the story always,
If you would really be,
In any time of trouble,
A comforter to me.

Refrain
Tell me the same old story
When you have cause to fear
That this world’s empty glory
Is costing me too dear.
Yes, and when that world’s glory
Is dawning on my soul,
Tell me the old, old story:
Christ Jesus makes thee whole.

Refrain

I love this verse especially:

"Tell me the story softly,
With earnest tones and grave;
Remember I’m the sinner
Whom Jesus came to save.
Tell me the story always,
If you would really be,
In any time of trouble,
A comforter to me."

 Romans 3:19   Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

  Romans 3:20   Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

  Romans 3:21   But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

  Romans 3:22   Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

  Romans 3:23   For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

  Romans 3:24   Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

  Romans 3:25   Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

  Romans 3:26   To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Romans 4:8

Precious friend, Your post has blessed me. I too have been encouraged lately by the old hymns that so well express our worship of Jesus and all He has done for me. I am not interested in the world and its things, just tell me more of Jesus. I am praying for you that God will bless you in a special way and continue to use you for His glory. Hugs.

I love to read the stories behind the old songs. So many times we find that they were written from places of deep pain and heartache. It is in those places that it seems that God refines us the most and the sweetest, deepest spiritual fruit comes forth. My Daddy used to often remind me that Christian character is forged in the crucible of pain. It comforts me to know that if God could bring those writers through and they could write about it, He can do the same for us today in our trials. Our friend often used to say, "God will bring you through if you can stand the pull." Thank you for sharing this. Have a wonderful day!

Ah dear Sunshine ☀️ so very thankful for those who’ve gone before to encourage and uplift our hearts, hymns of great worth are often forged in the cauldron of ill health and pain of body and heart. This is truly a beautiful hymn and that verse you lifted out as your favourite in this glorious hymn is definitely the one that also caught my breath too as thought upon it.
Thanks for being a blessing, God bless you too.
